Sudhir Diwan, MD

Dr. Sudhir Diwan, nationally and internationally recognized as a key opinion leader in the field of pain management, is the Executive Director of Manhattan Spine & Pain Medicine. Board certified in Pain Medicine and Anesthesiology, he completed his Residency in Anesthesiology at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital of Columbia University and fellowship in pain management at New York Presbyterian Hospital of Cornell University.
Dr. Diwan was the former Director of the Tri-Institutional Pain Fellowship Program and Division of Pain Medicine at Ivy League Weill Medical College of Cornell University for 10 years, where he also served as associate professor of clinical anesthesiology, and on the faculty for the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health, the Comprehensive Spine Center, and the Jill Robert IBD Center for Gastrointestinal Health, all at the world renowned New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Diwan has published extensively in prestigious peer-reviewed medical journals and medical books on a variety of pain management topics. He is on the Editorial Board for the Pain Physician - an official journal of the American Society of Pain Physicians (ASIPP) since 2008, and was invited Guest Editor for Journal of Techniques in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Management 2009. Dr. Diwan is the Examiner for the Certification Board for American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians (ABIPP) and Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP) offered by the World Institute of Pain. He is the chairman of the Neuropathic Pain Council of the Neuropathy Association of America, and is a regular speaker for the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists on the topic of pain management and management of cancer pain.
Dr. Diwan is well-known for treating the most complex and challenging cases of chronic pain. Among the types of conditions he most frequently encounters are chronic pain syndromes, neuropathic pain syndromes, complex regional pain syndromes, postherpetic neuralgia, chest wall pain syndromes, back pain, neck pain, failed back surgery syndrome, and cancer related pain syndromes. Dr. Diwan offers the latest state-of-the-art therapeutic options, including minimally invasive spinal surgery, epidurals and nerve blocks, intradiscal procedures, radiofrequency or chemical neurolysis, cryoneurolysis, spinal cord or peripheral nerve stimulation, and implantable intrathecal infusion pumps for pain management.
Dr. Diwan has provided his expertise in pain medicine to articles appearing in leading news papers including The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times, and has made various television appearances including Fox 5’s Good Day New York and Health Headlines on CBS for latest research on radiofrequency lesioning for chronic back pain. He was selected as one of America’s Top Physicians in 2003. He is recipient of the “Physician of The Year-2007” by the nursing council of The New York Presbyterian Hospital. The Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd. named Dr. Diwan America ’s Top Doctor for Cancer Pain in 2009 and 2010 and named him on the list of “America’s Top Doctors” in 2008, 2009, and 2010, Best Doctors in New York Metro Area in 2008-2009 and 2010.
In addition to his busy pain management practice, Dr. Diwan lectures extensively and interacts regularly with experts in the field of pain medicine nationally and internationally. He has been guest speaker for many noteworthy organizations including the American Cancer Society, the American Society of Anesthesiology, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, the World Institute of Pain, and numerous pain specialty societies and congresses in Europe.
