President, Manhattan Spine & Pain Medicine, PC
President, New York Society of Interventional Pain Physicians

Sanjay Bakshi, MD, is a leading New York pain medicine specialist who founded Manhattan Spine & Pain Medicine in 2003. He holds three board certifications: in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), and in pain medicine by both the ABA and the American Board of Pain Medicine.

He is an attending physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, and in the Department of Pain Management and Palliative Care at Beth Israel Medical Center, and at Bayshore Medical Center in New Jersey.

Dr. Bakshi received his pain management fellowship training at the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. He also worked as a member of the attending staff at Johns Hopkins after finishing his fellowship.

“My anesthesia residency training involved a rotation in pain management,” Dr. Bakshi recalls. “I was taken aback by the number of patients I saw who had endured years of suffering, and had gone to different doctors without being able to pinpoint what was causing their pain.

“The pain management doctors were immediately able to figure out what the problem was and help the patient,” he says. “That was my impetus to specialize in pain management.”

Dr. Bakshi practices interventional pain management. “I do minimally invasive procedures to help diagnose and treat neck and back pain,” he explains. “Most patients do not need surgery.”

Dr. Bakshi has lectured and published extensively on spinal cord stimulation. As part of a nationwide multi-center study, he implanted the first spinal cord stimulator for refractory angina in the New York region at Lenox Hospital. The procedure was transmitted live to an international cardiology conference in Washington, DC.

As a leading medical educator, Dr. Bakshi continues to instruct pain management fellows and attending physicians in pain management techniques. He has written many peer-reviewed articles on pain management and is the author of three textbooks on pain management - A Practical Approach to Interventional Pain Management, Symptom Oriented Pain Management, and World Clinics: Anesthesia, Critial Care & Pain Management published by Jaypee Brothers Publishing.

Dr. Bakshi has been recognized as one of the best physicians in his specialty of pain medicine in the New York Metro Area, in the lists of 2012 Best Doctors by New York Magazine and U.S. World & News Report’s Top Doctors.

The magazine lists are determined in collaboration with New York City research and information company Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., publisher of America's Top Doctors® and other guides. Castle Connolly, Ltd. bases its Top Doctors selections on nominations submitted by fellow physicians and reviewed by its physician-led research team. Licensed physicians vote online for those doctors they view as exceptional and to whom they would be most likely refer patients.

Participating physicians nominate those doctors who, in their judgment, are the best in their field and related fields, not only for their professional qualifications and reputation, but also for their skills in dealing with patients. Dr. Bakshi has been featured on WABC-TV, Fox and WB 11, as well as New York Newsday, Star-Ledger, Bayonne Ledger, Staten Island Advance and Good Health.

Before starting Manhattan Spine & Pain Medicine, Dr. Bakshi was director of pain management for Healthcare Associates in Medicine in Staten Island, NY. He has also been an instructor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Bakshi earned an MBA in health care from Baruch College/Mt. Sinai Hospital and received his medical degree from the University of Bombay, India. He has conducted numerous lectures and presentations for physicians in the US and abroad, and was recently invited to lecture by the Egyptian Pain Society in Cairo, Egypt. Dr. Bakshi is licensed to practice medicine in New York, New Jersey and Maryland.

During his anesthesia training, Dr. Bakshi received the Robert D. Dripps, MD, Memorial Award for Outstanding Resident in Anesthesiology. He is a member of the American Board of Pain Medicine, the American Pain Society, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the International Spine Intervention Society, the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists and the North American Spine Society.
